I talked with a pastor who had not had a vacation in 7 years. He knew he needed one, but didn’t know how to create space to get one.
After getting off the call, I created the following resource to help church leaders think about vacation time. If you want to talk more, let me know.
Goal: To help you consider how to plan your calendar and vacation so that you and those entrusted to you can flourish and thrive for the long haul. This should be done alongside your wife so that she has a voice and so that you hear it early.

- What are the important regular Dates (Birthday, Anniversary, etc) in the coming year for…
- Me
- Wife
- Kids
- What are some significant events that are happening in their lives?
- Example: start of school or end of school
- What are some events that we want to particularly celebrate and mark?
- Example: Graduation or special birthday
- What events are happening in our extended family?
- Example: Grandparent turning 70
Work
- What are important regular events happening in my work life?
- Example: Busy Season
- What are some significant events at work?
- Example: Company retreat
- Easter/Ministry Event, etc
- Product Launch
- What are some moments that we want to particularly celebrate and mark?
Holidays
- What will you do for major holidays? How does this affect your vacation plans?
- Are there long weekends that you can capitalize on for more time off?
Family
- Are vacations with extended family restful for you?
- Are there expectations extended family has for you?
Reflect on your Rhythm
- This year, were there times we started redlining?
- When?
- What caused this?
- What changes can you make for next year?
- Are there seasons in the year where things slow down around me and it would make sense for me to take time off? Is there a slow season in our community or at work?
